A restaurant with a somewhat odd name and hard to find doorway, and a gregarious owner with a loud personality, Luyu and Yum Yum is a surprisingly delightful experience. Though at first blush one may think the dumplings are a tad overpriced, that's only because you haven't seen their banquet menus yet. Ranging between $43 to $59, the banquet menus are seriously good value and designed to be shared among friends.
Also, the pastry chef at Luyu and Yum Yum is a jealously guarded treasure according to the owner, who has had to fight off attempts to poach her from nearby businesses.

Duck Pan Cake |
The duck pancakes is balanced - not too salty, not to oily. It is light yet satisfying, a perfect way to start the meal.

Mr Luyu Herb Dumpling |
Very fresh and tasting of virtue (given the vegetables).
|
“Kiss me” Dumpling |
The cutely-named "kiss me" dumplings are well-made, but cannot be compared to the xiao long bao (as that is essentially what kiss me dumplings are) at Din Tai Fung. But then again, to compare all xiao long baos to that of Din Tai Fung would really be a tad harsh. Most restaurants don't make them that well, while Luyu and Yum Yum's effort is at least respectable.

pot stickers |
Hearty, filling and satisfying - what's not to love? The pot stickers at Luyu and Yum Yum are lightly friend so the skin is a bit crispy, which adds to the texture.
|
Fried Rice |
Pretty well done - even I went in for a sneaky second, despite my often-voiced dislike of fried rice. Tastes better with a drizzle of soy sauce.
|
Mama’s Chilli Chicken |
The chicken was delicious. Succulent and bursting with flavour, it went perfectly with the fried rice.
|
Egg plant |
Encased in batter and fried; but soft and delicate inside, the eggplant is a wonderful dish.
|
affogato |
With a generous shot of fliqeure. Delicious.
A pretty big banquet for $45, and worth every penny.
One member of our group is vegan, so the owner very kindly made her her own little set of food, which was above and beyond kind. I just wanted to showcase the adorable dumbling set she got, and the hedgehog is just too cute.
Score: 4 / 5
Cost: go for the banquet, you won't regret it! Individual items can be a tad on the pricey side compared to cheap eat Chinatown restaurants.
Address: Level 1, 196 King St, Newtown. Look for a yellow sign.
