Chao Ba

One of the newest additions to the Chatswood Concourse area, Chao Ba claims to be a Vietnamese restaurant with a French twist. I have noticed that it is gaining an increasing number of clients over the weeks - though it has by no means reached cult status and requires lining up, I would say that booking is recommended on weekend evenings.

Beef pho
Chao Ba's beef pho boasts a beautifully rich yet still light broth that is oh-so-satisfying, especially on a cool, raining day. The beef strips are fresh, and the rice noodles silky. Just looking at the glossy top layer of soup is making me hungry again.

Chicken Curry
The chicken curry is mild with deliciously melt-in-your-mouth chicken pieces. The French influence presents itself in the plating - this almost looks like a soup, rather than a curry.
UPDATE: after a discussion with my dining companion, I thought I should put in his two cents: the vegetable was quite bland, and the curry shouldn't be so soupy - a curry, because it is enjoyed with rice, should be thick and flavoursome.

Vietnamese Drip Coffee
Chao Ba is one of the few places I have seen serving traditional Vietnamese Coffee. Coffee ground is passed through a special filtering device and drank with condensed milk. The result is a silky, very sweet and very potent drink that leaves an aromatic aftertaste in your mouth. A must try for coffee-lovers.

As far as Vietnamese food goes, Chao Ba is pretty good. The atmosphere is lovely, the presentation of dishes beautiful, and the staff helpful and friendly. As this was our first visit, we kept the dishes pretty simple and down-to-basics. However, there are some innovative items on the menu which I'd very much like to try - particularly the Vietnamese "tapas" - then I would be able to comment on the French influence more. I shall save a higher score for my next visit, perhaps.
Cost: what one would expect for Chatswood, but a little on the pricier side for Vietnamese food.

Afternoon Tea at the Four Seasons

Afternoon tea is a Mother's Day tradition in my family. Over the years, I have taken my mum to most of the afternoon tea purveyors in Sydney, and Mode Kitchen at the Four Seasons stands out for its beautiful, romantic atmosphere.  Situated on the second floor complete with a harpist and directly across a wall of beautiful ceramic ware, the afternoon tea set up is at once private (because you're not looking directly at any other table) yet on display (comme Marie Antoinette) because you are seated right above the hotel foyer.  The tea selection is small, but curated; and ceremoniously brought to the table for selection. The purveyor is Jing Tea. Tucked away in the charming, quaint, bird-cage filled Angel Place, Ragazzi is one restaurant I have been looking forward to trying for a long time, because I have had a couple people recommend this restaurant to me a good spot to dine in the CBD.  Having never been to Ragazzi before, I was delighted to see that they have a chef's choice menu. I am a big fan of giving control over to those who prepare the food, because I trust that the chef's menu is the highlights reel. Having said that, the fact that we chose the chef's menu is where we went wrong. There were three of us dining, and I think the restaurant actually under-served by providing two people portions for most of the main courses and dessert.  The fact that 2 of the courses are side-salads also significantly decrease the value of the chef's menu.
