Christmas Feast at Kobe Jones

Kobe Jones put on a Christmas Feast for a mish mash of characters - people who don't celebrate Christmas, tourists, people who can't be bothered, and happy people (it has been said that happiness is a close-knit, loving family in another city).

This eye-popping seven-course-long feast starts with a sake upon arrival, served chilled. On every table are Christmas crackers, and I got what I believed was a distress-call whistle (I'm not Grinch), but it turned out to be a mini sticky tape dispenser - I love it! So with alcohol and stationery, my night started right.

Sake
The sake served is Miyamizu, it is very light, you barely feel the alcohol.

Number One Special
The first dish of the evening was also the highlight of the evening. The "Number One Special" is a crab salad with avocado, wrapped in kingfish and nori. Drenched in Kobe Jones secret sauce, it was truly delicious.

Seafood Platter
An Aussie Christmas isn't an Aussie Christmas without seafood. The californian rolls had quite an inspired touch with the chili sauce; and the sashimi was very fresh. The oysters could have come in a nicer miso sauce, and the prawns were average.

Alaskan Crab
The Alaskan crab was prepared in a very simple manner and served cold. Without any dressing and sauces, the sweetness of the crab meat spoke for itself.

Lemon Sorbet
The palette cleanser came in the form of an overly sweet, and not-sufficiently chilled lemon sorbet. To be fair, this was the only truly disappointing part of the evening - and very small, insignificant part at that.

Roast Pork with Apple Sauce
The other tradition of Christmas meals, of course, is the roast. Apart from one dry piece, most of the pork pieces are tender and juicy. I loved the combination of soy glaze and apple sauce; and the bean sprout had also been tossed in a delicious light-soy sauce.

Lobster
By this stage of the meal, I was extremely full. Lobster is what Kobe Jones is known for (apart from their top  grade wagyu) Juicy, large lobster pieces had been lightly battered tampura-style, and accompanied by a plum dipping sauce. I felt they were a little heavy-handed with butter, which made this dish hard to eat after all the food that came before. While still delicious, I would have preferred a slightly simpler treatment of this venerable crustacean; or for this dish to have been served earlier.

Dessert Platter
The dessert platter includes strawberry panacotta, mud cake with vanilla and green tea ice cream and cheese cake. The mud cake is extremely dense, rich and delicious. The panacotta is light and silky, as one would expect.

The highlight of the dessert dish is the cheese cake.  The cake itself is slightly salty, as good cheese cakes are. I also liked the poached cherry, and the very crunchy chocolate biscuit pieces.

Score: 4 / 5
What a delightful way to spend Christmas - no cooking, no cleaning, a lovely waterfront view, good company, and good food.
