Dosa Hut

Harris Park is filled with wonderful, authentic Indian restaurants. It's quite a far way from where I live, so every time I go, it feels like quite the occasion and a special treat. There are many restaurants dotted around the main strip. Dosa Hut is a chain - and despite its name, its menu stretches well beyond dosa alone.

Coconut Summer Cooler $6.95

The day on which we visited Dosa Hut was a scorcher - the type where even a few minutes in the sun is enough to burn one up. On days like these, the coconut summer cooler certainly does what its name promises: a refreshing, sweet, coconut-and-lime concoction that cools one down.

Samosa Chat, $9.95

Samosa Chat is my favourite Indian appetiser. The best way I have to describe it is samosas smashed in a minty yogurt sauce. The complex curry flavour of the potato-filled, hot samosas form an interest contrast against the cold, tamarind-sour sauce to create quite the flavour explosion. For those who cannot take a lot of heat, fear not: this is not a spicy dish.

Butter Chicken ($16.95) and Garlic Naan ($7 for 2)

I am slightly embarrassed to admit that when it comes to curries, butter chicken is my curry of choice every time - I am well aware that it does not rate as the most authentic of dishes, and does not do Indian cuisine justice. I feel a little less embarrassed after I consulted a friend of Indian background who reassured me that it's also her Indian dish of choice - I mean, fragrant, tomato-y, salty, comforting sauce enveloping tender chicken pieces: what's not to love?

The garlic Naan at Dosa Hut is very, very garlicky, and crispy instead of pillowy. I have a slight preference for the pillowy, chewy type; but those thin, crispy bread are very good indeed.

Chicken 65 Biryani, $16.95

I'm still not quite sure what "chicken 65" means, but don't be fooled by the plain appearance of this dish. It packs both flavour and heat. Hidden underneath the tumbling rice are bright-red chicken. Observe:

There are three levels of heat from which to choose, and we chose the medium level. It is still quite hot, probably the most heat I can personally handle - but if you are a heat-fiend, there is a hot level to satisfy your cravings.
