Yellow

Yellow is considered one of the best casual restaurants in Sydney, and I have been meaning to try this Potts Point establishment for some time. When I arrived, the name literally hits you in the face - the building is a bright, sunny shade of yellow that makes the restaurant pretty hard to miss.

A weekend brunch is incomplete without the assistance of some alcohol, so that's where we shall begin.

Them Apples, $18
Them Apples is a sweet, heady concoction made special by the addition of spiced tea. The flavour is rich, spicy yet not overly-sweet.

My Lost Saints, $18
There is indeed something rather saint-like about this light, fresh, citricy number. Elderflower adds a subtle floral taste to this easy-to-go-down cocktail.

The lunch menu at Yellow is designed to be shared. The list of items is not big - food-wise, there is a choice of 4 entree-sized dishes and 4 heartier dishes. We decide to get two hearty dishes to share between the two of us, starting with a saucisson sandwich.

Saucisson Sandwich, $18

The toast is smothered in butter, sandwiching salty cured meat, tart pickles and sauerkraut. The flavour is a perfect balance between savoury and mouth-watering acidity.

Forbidden Rice, $28
This is one impressive dish. Forbidden rice is a type of black rice, which has a slightly chewy husk that gives the dish an amazing texture. Cooked with butter beans and smoked yogurt, with just sprinklings of raisins among the rice, this is one of the best rice dishes I have ever tasted, and certainly worth the slightly-steeper price tag.

Now we have come to the dessert-cheese portion of the meal. We ordered an assortment of cheeses, and were presented with some very high-quality, chewy bread, and a selection of four cheeses: one gooey, one soft and creamy, one blue and a cheddar. Cheese being cheese, they were delicious and costed $23.

Licorice Bread, $11
Now to the highlight of the meal - sweet, sticky, rich licorice bread. Jet black and shiny, sprinkled with rough sea salt flakes, this is perhaps the coolest-looking 'bread' I have ever seen. The texture is somewhere between bread and a very moist cake, and being ever-so-slightly sticky without being unpleasantly so. The licorice flavour is certainly present, but not offensive even if you're not a fan of licorice - rust me, I hate that stuff yet still love this bread. Enjoyed with butter, this is one decadent end to the meal.

Score: 4.5/5
Cost: Around $50pp without drinks, with drinks ranging between $10-$20+
Address: 57 Macleay Street, Potts Point
