Battle of the Burgers Vol 2
Annnnnnd we're back!
If a burger joint has a signature burger, I have gone for that burger. If not, I have gone for the most basic burger.
Bar Luca - Blame Canada
The famous Blame Canada certainly lives up to the hype. The very bottom of the burger is poutine, the Canadian dish involving chips, gravy and cheese curds. In the middle is the most succulent patty that's pink on the inside. Up top we have cheese and maple bacon, as well as maple mayo. The bun is a soft, sweet brioche, which makes it a satisfying, delicious sweet-and salty treat.
Score:
5 / 5
Cost: $15
Address: 52 Phillip St, Sydney
Bonditony's - Classic Cog
Bonditony's wins on the quality of its ingredients and its great value for money. All of its beef, bacon and eggs are free range and grass fed, and you can have sweet potatoes as a side without having to pay extra. The highlight of this tiny burger joint is its range of amazing sauces and condiments lined up against the counter - more than 10 types of American BBQ sauces, hot sauces and all the good stuff.
Score: 5 / 5
Cost: $12.90
The Hayberry - Classic
I was very excited for the Hayberry because its burger features on a number of 'best burgers of Sydney' lists. However, I really don't see what the fuss is about - to me, it tasted just like a cheese burger from McDonald's. The beef patty was a little overcooked and dry, the flavours are unsurprising with ketchup and mustard, plus some diced onions and pickles.
The highlight of the meal is actually the waffle fries - these golden babies are delicious.
The Hayberry also does a reasonable chicken wing, though at $14 it's rather over-priced. Also, for hot wings, they're not that hot. I have had equally good wings elsewhere for less.
Score: 2 / 5
Cost: $15 for Classic burger (waffle fries included); $14 for Signature Wings
Address: 97 Willoughby Rd, Crows Nest
Burger Bro? - The Elvis / The Classic
By far the best value for money, Burger Bro has one heck of an adventurous burger: the Elvis. Peanut butter is smeared generously on the soft, fluffy top bun, followed by a juicy patty, salty bacon, and a drizzle of maple syrup which somehow does not make the bun soggy (and is delicious with chips!).
I'm a big fan of the sweet and salty taste combo, but if that's not your thing their classic burger comes with a perfectly cooked fried egg. Can't say no to that.
Score: 4.5 / 5
Cos: $12 each
Address: Inside Hotel Chambers, 53 Martin Pl, Sydney

I must say, I wasn't super impressed with Bar Luca's fries. I probably won't buy them again next time I'm there.
ReplyDeleteMore than made up for by the (as reviewed) excellent burgers though.
