Buffalo Dining Club
Nestled off Victoria Street, the Buffalo Dining Club has a big reputation which results in an hour-long waiting list on busy evenings.
The concept is simple - quality ingredients, shared with friends over good wine. The staff are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable - when you sit down they ask you if you've been before, and if not, their default recommendation is to select a cheese with 2 side dishes, some cured meat, and a pasta to share.
They're also pretty spot on with wine recommendation - tell them what you like, and you'll be confidently presented with something that's right up your alley. So my advice? Trust the staff. They know what they're doing.
My friend and I selected a creamy, mild, organic goat cheese called Caprino, which is served with bread, crackers and spicy salami paste. Then, you can select 2 side dishes from a list of about 5 or 6. We decided to choose chorizo with Brussels sprouts and charred corn with chili coriander.
I have never been a big fan of Brussels sprouts because it has such a strong, questionable flavour. The Brussels sprouts at Baffalo Dining Club completely dispelled my prejudice. The Brussels sprouts here is sweet, firm and compliments the salty chorizo perfectly. The charred corn is delicious and satisfying, and offers a welcome palate relief from the saltiness of the Caprino.
San Daniele is one of my favourite proscuittos. It is not too fatty and beautifully soft. 30g is plenty for 2 people, and accompanies the cheese to perfection.
Now we move onto what Buffalo Dining Club is best known for: its pasta-served-in-a-cheese-wheel. This pasta dish is simple, yet genius: salt, pepper, olive oil and parsley pasta served up in a pecorino cheese wheel - as the wait staff tosses the pasta, they grab bits of the cheese with the tongs and serve the final product up with some house-made chili. Baffalo Dining Club goes through a pecorino wheel every couple of days, which goes to show just how popular this dish is - a must try.
Score: 4.5/5
So simple, yet so good.
Cost: although we didn't feel like we ordered a lot of food, we were both so full after the meal - so this means you can be very satisfied at around $25 each (excluding drinks), which isn't too bad.
