GOOD FOOD MONTH SPECIAL: Beautiful Beginnings at Kazbah

The beautiful interior at this Potts Point gem signalled the delicious meal that was to come. The room is a charming mish-mash of different styles: the tiles are distinctively Ottoman Empire; the furniture and ceiling are inner-city heavy-industrial; the wallpaper almost hailing from the Far-East; the utensils Moroccan; and the range of baked goods and coffee machine very European.

Minty water from pretty jars taste better. Fact.

The Good Food Month event, Beautiful Beginnings, allows you to choose between Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Morrocan sets; with a sweet dish and a savoury dish each. My friend and I left our fate to the chatty, cheeky and fabulous waiter, so I couldn't tell you what we actually ended up with.

Unlike most meals, this meal starts with dessert. The childhood me is overjoyed.

Churros with chocolate
Slightly crunchy on the outside but quite chewy inside, these golden artery-cloggers come with a generous serving of rich, thick dark chocolate. So far, so good.

Cheese Borek
Now this really is something. I didn't even know what a cheese borek was, and boy have I been missing out. It is basically a Turkish pastry filled with cheese (sweet feta, I think).  With the apricot jam and syrup-drenched fruits as companion, this is one decadent treat.

Now, we move onto the savoury.

The kidney beans are in a slightly sweet, silky sauce; and the bread is mildly spicy. Amazing.

The egg on the outside of this omeltte cake is silky soft, and the inside is so hearty I was surprised we did as well as we did!

Overall Score: 5 / 5 
When the sheer amount of food came rolling out of the kitchen, our chins just dropped. On top of the hearty serving size, everything was delicious and carefully crafted, designed to bring maximum joy to the meal. The plates and cups were so beautiful they added an extra level of charm to the experience. Highly recommended.
Cost: at $55 / 2pp, this is unbelievably good value.

Afternoon Tea at the Four Seasons

Afternoon tea is a Mother's Day tradition in my family. Over the years, I have taken my mum to most of the afternoon tea purveyors in Sydney, and Mode Kitchen at the Four Seasons stands out for its beautiful, romantic atmosphere.  Situated on the second floor complete with a harpist and directly across a wall of beautiful ceramic ware, the afternoon tea set up is at once private (because you're not looking directly at any other table) yet on display (comme Marie Antoinette) because you are seated right above the hotel foyer.  The tea selection is small, but curated; and ceremoniously brought to the table for selection. The purveyor is Jing Tea. I highly recommend the Flowering Osmanthus, which is a green tea with osmanthus flower, giving the tea a subtle yet warm sweetness.  Unlike most afternoon teas, the savoury layer is in the middle tier, rather than the bottom tier. Tucked away in the charming, quaint, bird-cage filled Angel Place, Ragazzi is one restaurant I have been looking forward to trying for a long time, because I have had a couple people recommend this restaurant to me a good spot to dine in the CBD.  Having never been to Ragazzi before, I was delighted to see that they have a chef's choice menu. I am a big fan of giving control over to those who prepare the food, because I trust that the chef's menu is the highlights reel. Having said that, the fact that we chose the chef's menu is where we went wrong. There were three of us dining, and I think the restaurant actually under-served by providing two people portions for most of the main courses and dessert.  The fact that 2 of the courses are side-salads also significantly decrease the value of the chef's menu.
