Loulou

When Loulou opened a couple of months ago, there was a real buzz about this chic French bistro and boulangerie that makes what I consider to be the best baguette in Sydney, surpassing even my old favourite, Azuki Bakery. So when an opportunity came up to try the cuisine, I was curious to see if it lives up to the hype.

Chicken liver parfait, $18

This unassuming-looking liver parfait is my favourite dish of the evening. Beautifully creamy and smooth, the flavours wonderfully balanced, and paired with a soft, buttery brioche from Loulou's esteemed bakery, this is a fine way to start a meal.

Pommes Dauphines, $12

Fluffy, smooth, creamy mashed potatoes encased in a light batter and gently fried, this is the comfort food of one's dreams. Absolutely gorgeous - highly recommended with a drink or two. Speaking of which, the cocktails at Loulou are classic and well-balanced. I particularly recommend the Vieux Carre.

John Dory, $48

If I were to recommend one main dish only, this would be it. Perfectly cooked to fall apart but still retain a little bounce, the rich caviar-dotted sauce adds a touch of luxury without overwhelming the freshness of the fish itself.

Steak frite, $54

Ooof, now we come to the one disappointing dish of the evening. The steak is not done well at all. It is too smokey and bordering on tough despite being ordered to medium-rare. I have had a lot better at a similar price point.

Peach Mille Feuille, $18

Dripping in decadent caramel sauce, the mille feuille is respectable but not the best I've had. The pastry is a little on the crunchy side as compared to my preference, which is for layers upon layers of flaky, paper-thin strips. Having said that, the flavours are quite lovely.

Souffle a la cerise, $20

This, ladies and gentlemen, is an absolute standout. Cherry souffle, light as a cloud and perfectly cooked through. As far as souffles are concerned, this is where we set the bar.
