Cre Asian
Cafe Cre Asian is hidden in an unassuming little lane way right next door to the hole-in-the-wall Berta, which is one of my favourite restaurants of all time (check out my review here). Cre Asian is joining its esteemed neighbour among the rank of my favourite places in Sydney to satiate my love of fine food.
Although it truly is tiny - not much bigger than what is shown in this picture - the quality and variety of food coming out of this kitchen is amazing.
The most famous item on Cre Asian's menu is its matcha latte, which comes in an artisanal-looking bowl with a generous serving. This is hands down the best matcha latte I have ever had. When you first drink it, it is quite sweet - but the high quality matcha flavour chases up quickly and leaves a distinctive bitterness behind that is oh-so-satisfying. I think this has ruined all other matcha lattes for me - in comparison, the others just taste too milky, too watery, and generally of low quality.
We tried two sandwiches from the small but creative sandwich menu - a corned beef and sauerkraut creation and a poached chicken and mushroom creation. My favourite is the chicken sandwich, which is like nothing I had tasted before. The surprising paring of chicken with a range of mushrooms was simply inspired. The mild kick of wasabe mayo balances out the flavours perfectly. The corned beef sandwich was pretty good as well, but not as impressive as this highly innovative chicken number.
Apart from its matcha lattes, Cre Asian is known for their variety of matcha desserts. The matcha fondant is a decadant dessert that puts an Asian twist on the traditional chocolate lava cake, and man - it really works.
And finally, the matcha scroll is light and fluffy.
The cafe serves an all-day breakfast and other sweet treats such as some very reasonably-priced cookies (at $2 a pop) and macarons. I am definitely looking forward to going again - if only just for my matcha latte fix.
Score: 4.5/5
Cost: approx $25pp
